My love for animals and nature began as a young child when my older brothers would
bring home orphaned wild animals and birds for me to raise. I was fortunate to grow
up near Powder Mill Park, Pittsford NY where I spent my days hiking, swimming and
exploring, usually with a crow or baby raccoon on my shoulder. My love for art also
began at a young age. My mother always made sure we had creative projects to work
on and my family continually encouraged me to pursue my artistic talents.
I have combined two of my deepest passions, my love and endless interest in our
planet Earth and the birds and animals that inhabit it, and my desire to paint.
My style has evolved through my 25 years as a commercial illustrator and fine artist,
where I have been fortunate to work with and learn from many extremely talented
designers, art directors, illustrators and painters. I have created works for many
professional and private clienteles. I have spent countless, wonderful hours in
the woods observing, gathering reference, sketching and studying our natural places,
and have donated drawings and paintings to benefit local parks and conservation
projects.
My goal within each painting is to combine intriguing composition and rendering
techniques to capture a fleeting moment that portrays a story and evokes a feeling,
from the animal or bird to the art viewer. I feel if even for a few minutes I have
made someone appreciate the world of art, as well as the wild world, I have achieved
quite an accomplishment.
I pay close attention to detail and my colors are achieved through multiple layers
of tinted glazes to capture the warmth, diversity and drama that is found in nature.
A truly wonderful painting is much like a beautiful scene, sometimes the light,
the place and the subject all fall into a magical moment where you wish you could
go again but know it will only happen once. My goal is to capture those special
and unique moments.
I feel extremely fortunate to live in the Finger Lakes Region of New York
with my family, where natural beauty, inspiration and reference surround me every
day. I hope to bring awareness through my paintings to the beautiful wildlife and
habitats that need our concern and are so essential to the quality of all of our
lives.
